Our Story

Eight years in the making

In 2018, two people in Baguio were quietly putting their lives back together.

Syd shifted her minor from psychology to philosophy—nudged, gently but firmly, by Sir Adonis and Ma’am Kelly when other paths closed. Franz, meanwhile, had stepped away from law school and taken a teaching post at UP Baguio while finishing his Master’s degree. Both were beginning again.

That same year, because of the K–12 transition, there were fewer philosophy classes than usual, and the academic community felt unusually small. Paths that might not have crossed otherwise did.

One night, after a small gathering with friends, Syd and Franz found themselves still talking long after everyone else had gone home. They stayed until five in the morning, covering everything and nothing, the way people do when something unspoken has already begun.

There was no courtship. No first date. No grand declaration. Just two people who, quietly and without ceremony, chose each other—and a question that came too late to begin anything, but just in time to confirm it.

Eight years later, that recognition hasn’t faded.

So they are getting married!

What to Wear

Filipiniana

Formal but not stiff. Dress in our palette, in something you'll be comfortable in for a long evening.

Barong tagalog, terracotta terno, and sage Filipiniana gown — the look together
Terracotta puff-sleeve Filipiniana gown Cream off-shoulder Filipiniana gown

For women

Terno, modern Filipiniana, or a long dress in terracotta, sage, ecru, or deep earth tones. A barong-inspired co-ord works beautifully too.

Cream barong tagalog long sleeve Cream barong tagalog short sleeve Terracotta earth-tone dress shirt alternative

For men

Barong tagalog (jusi or piña preferred) with dark trousers. If a barong is hard to source, a cream or earth-tone dress shirt works.

For our ninongs and ninangs

traditional Filipiniana

You are standing at the front with us, so there is one request we are making of you and no others: keep to the motif. Everything else — the design, the cut, the fabric, where you have it made — is entirely yours.

An ecru Filipiniana gown and a cream barong tagalog
For reference only — yours does not have to look like this.

Ninangs

Traditional Filipiniana in ecru. That is the only requirement. Choose any design you love — terno, saya, modern cut, whatever suits you.

Ninongs

Barong tagalog. No requirement on the trousers — the dark ones in the drawing are just one way to wear it. If you already own a barong you love, wear that one.

You will be sourcing your own, so there is nothing to fit and nothing to send us. If anything is hard to find, tell us and we will help.

If you have a barong from your last wedding, wear that.
If you've been waiting for a reason to buy one — this is it.

Getting There

Travel & Where to Stay

Manila in February is warm and dry — around 28°C in the evening at Cherish. Dress in breathable layers and bring a light wrap for the open-air garden.

Where we're staying

Ascott Makati

We have a small family block — reach out to Syd or Franz directly if you'd like to be added. Otherwise we encourage Airbnb or hotels near Makati, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay, or Malate.

Getting around

Use Ride Hailing Apps

Ride hailing apps such as Grab, InDrive, or Joyride are the most reliable way to move around Manila. Book a car from your hotel to San Sebastian, then from the church to Light of Love after the ceremony. Both venues have onsite parking if you're driving.

Church to reception

Quiapo → Santol St

From San Sebastian: head to Quezon Blvd, continue along España Blvd, right to Araneta Ave, then to Santol St. The LOL compound is along Santol near Araneta. Budget 15–30 min in early evening.

Ascott → San Sebastian 20–40 min
Ascott → LOL Cherish 30–45 min
Church → Reception 15–30 min

    Syd and Franz monogram

    thank you.

we can't wait to see you.

    The Rings

    three, before the fourth

Three rings, and people ask. So, in order:

    Syd's three rings

    the wishbone

Franz gave me this for my twenty-fifth birthday and called it a promise. A wishbone is for wishing on, so that is what I did with it. Health. Steadiness. The ordinary happiness of a life shared with someone. Nothing dramatic. I have worn it every day since.

    the marguerite

August 2024, Rome. St Paul Outside the Walls, which is a long way from Baguio and not a place either of us had marked on any map of our life together.

The ring is a marguerite. A daisy. Small stones gathered around one in the middle, and the old French word for that arrangement is an entourage, which I did not know when he gave it to me and have not been able to unlearn since.

The verse that day was 1 Corinthians 13:4. Love is patient. Ours had been, though not in the way that line usually gets used at weddings. We were never waiting for love to arrive. We were taking our time admitting it was already there. By then we had spent years choosing each other, and some days wandering around Europe, and somewhere in all of that we had agreed without ever properly saying it that this was the rest of our lives. In Rome he said it properly. The second promise, and the first one with a future attached to it.

    the marquise

November 12, 2024. Our sixth anniversary. The engagement ring came last, after the wish and after the promise, which is not the order anyone plans.

This is the one people recognise. The one that lets you say the word engaged and have everybody know exactly what you mean.

I still find it funny that the ring meant to begin everything turned up when most of it had already happened. The years of learning each other. The small ordinary building of a life. The future we had quietly settled on long before. It did not begin anything. It gave the thing a name.

So I wear all three. A wish, a promise, and the word for it.

    The Cats

    Kali & Logos

Kali, one of Syd and Franz’s cats
Logos, one of Syd and Franz’s cats

If you've wondered about the cats in our monogram — they're real. Their names are Kali and Logos. They'll be with us at Ascott on the wedding morning.

They will not be at the church.

(Probably the only ones happy about that.)

No, you don't have to bring them a gift. *wink*

    On Gifts

your presence is the only present we're after

But if you'd like to bless our new home, we humbly accept monetary gifts.

    At the venue

Wishing well at the welcome table — envelopes welcome.

    Gift registry

If we put together a registry, we will add it here in November.

And if you'd rather not — please come hungry instead.

    FAQ

    common questions

    Can I bring a plus-one?

Only if your invitation says so. We've planned this room very intentionally — please respect the seating count we've reserved for your party.

    Will there be a registry?

If we put together a registry, we will add it to the gifts section above.

What time should I arrive at the church?

3:00 PM at the latest. Doors close at 3:25 PM — we want everyone seated before the procession begins.

Will there be parking at the reception?

Yes — onsite at Light of Love. Or take a Grab; it's easier for the evening and when you already had too much to drink.

Can I take photos during the ceremony?

We love that you want to commemorate the moment — but so does our photographer! To make sure nothing blocks those once-in-a-lifetime shots, we ask that you keep your screens tucked away during the ceremony. Don't worry: you'll have plenty of photo ops at the reception.

    Is there a kids' table?

Yes — with crayons and quiet activities. Kids are welcome at family tables too.

    What if it rains?

Cherish is partially covered. Bring something warm for the evening, just in case.

Can I bring some leftovers home?

Please do. We'd rather it go home with you than the bin.

What if the website doesn't work for my RSVP?

Email fjyoshiy1231@gmail.com or pascual.jsydney@gmail.com, or message Syd and Franz directly.

    Syd and Franz monogram

    thank you.

This is the most personal thing we'll ever ask anyone to help us with. Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. Thank you for being part of the day we'll remember for the rest of our lives.
